Syrian Culture in Times of Conflict

Syrian Culture in Times of Conflict was a series of thirteen live and live-streamed discussions hosted in Beirut and Stockholm between 2014 and 2015. video recordings of the discussions are archived and can be viewed in the sharq.org library of publications & films.

over 40 diverse specialists with a passion for Syria took to the stage during the series of 13 panel discussions held over the course of 13 months. musical performances, poetry recitals and film screenings showcasing Syrian talent followed many of the discussions. the goal was to encourage and enable offline and online discussion about Syrian culture and identity and provide a framework for understanding the various cultural challenges that Syrian society has been forced to face during times of conflict.

collectively, the discussants reflected different perspectives and experiences and brought insights from diverse cultures and professionals. they included: journalists, medics, humanitarian workers, community builders, poets, broadcasters, students, artists, musicians, academics, archivists, curators, filmmakers, architects, and heritage specialists.

all the discussions were video recorded and can be watched in the original language in which the debate was held (either English or Arabic) or with a dubbed translation.
