artworks: inspired by Syrian Histories

sharq.org commissioned three artists to produce works inspired by the oral history collection Syrian Histories. the works were exhibited at a multidisciplinary event held in Beirut in 2019 to celebrate the Tarikhi story archive.

artists: Madonna Adib, Ghenwa Abou Fayad, mirella salame

the artworks were as diverse in nature and style as the stories that inspired them and were commissioned in a bid to highlight to artists the inspirational quality of stories and personal narratives. sharq.org encourages artists, cultural actors, journalists, researchers and other creatives to explore the Tarikhi archive of 500 stories recorded during the revolution years and to offer new ways of communicating and sharing them.

mirella salame’s installation was made up of stones wrapped in papers on which select quotes from the Syrian Histories collection were written, reflecting the strength and delicacy of shared stories
Ghenwa Abou Fayad’s sketches reflected the many moods and personalities within the oral history collection, while the sound installation – a concrete block with a speaker inside – reflected the intimacy of the act of sharing stories
visitors stand next to a television set on which a video installation created by Madonna Adib’s is being screened. the video combined excerpts from the oral history collection Syrian Histories with excerpts from the Syrian artist’s own life.
